Marisa Genelly, Gift Processing Specialist

What do you do at HSU?

I am a Gift Processing Specialist in the Office of Philanthropy. It is my and my coworker’s responsibility to process, intake, and keep up records for all donations received by the University. Along with the rest of my department team, we input into and maintain the database as well as communicate with our donors with gift acknowledgements. I have been with HSU in this position since September of 2017.

Where are you from?

I am fortunate enough to call Arcata my hometown. Although I moved away after high school, I moved back about 7 years ago. I am partial to the ocean and forests here and can’t imagine a better place to raise my daughters. With so many things to do and see, we are thankful to have endless adventures.

What kind of work did you do before HSU?

Prior to my current position here at HSU, I was in finance for about 6 ½ years. Most recently working in consumer loans in our local community, which gave me the opportunity to work one-on-one with clients on their goals of improving credit. I am lucky enough to have made some wonderful connections while working in this member facing position, and still have a few elderly members who I stay in touch with.

Tell us about your family...

I have two energetic and hilarious daughters. The youngest recently turned 7 and the eldest is nearly 10. We are fortunate to have my mother in the area, as well as a fantastic aunt, uncle and cousins.

What are your favorite TV shows?

I enjoy movies and TV shows with historical subjects, like Netflix’s The Last Kingdom. I have recently become addicted to the Podcast “LORE,” by Aaron Mahnke, which was recommended by a co-worker, and is chilling historical folklore tales.

What is your favorite music?

I am currently enjoying a lot of Sam Smith, I admire all his music. I like live music, and love to go to local shows when I have the time available.

What kind of books do you like?

I read as much as possible, I enjoy books of nearly any genre. My favorite author is Neale Donald Walsh, whom I had the pleasure of seeing at a seminar about 4 years ago, and fell in love with many of his books right away.

What is your favorite place in Humboldt?

My favorite place in Humboldt County is Houda Point. I am an ocean lover, and this particular spot is my favorite place to go to get back to the water.

What is your dream vacation?

If I were able to go anywhere on vacation I would like to travel to through Europe and Asia to visit different historical, religious and spiritual sites.

What are your hobbies?

Most of my time is spent doing my children’s hobbies, which involve a lot of gem and mineral collecting, but my hobby of choice is reading as much as possible.

What is your favorite place on campus?

I feel fortunate to work on such a gorgeous campus, and love taking walks up to Founder’s Hall and around the Redwood Bowl on breaks and lunch.
