Courtney Haraldson

Courtney Haraldson, Social Media/Projects Coordinator, Marketing and Communications

What department do you work for, what do you do, and how long have you worked for HSU?
I work for Marketing & Communications. I handle the Humboldt State University social media presence and the other half of my job is supporting our alumni office and focusing on engagement and events. I’ve been here a little over a year and a half. I love it!

Where are you from and what brought you to Humboldt?
I am from Humboldt County, born and raised. Humboldt holds a special place in my heart and I’ve never been somewhere that’s felt quite like home. I did go away to college for four years to live in Sonoma County. That’s a beautiful place as well-but there is something about Humboldt that pulls you back. I’m glad to be here and feel fortunate to be able to work at HSU with great people.

Where did you work before coming to HSU?
Before HSU I was the Marketing Coordinator for HealthSPORT.

Tell us about your family…
Since my husband and I are both from Humboldt County and most of our family lives here, so we feel really lucky we are able to live here with great jobs. My husband is a fourth grade teacher at South Bay Elementary. We don’t have kids yet-but our dog is our kid for now and his name is Tucker.

What are you favorite TV shows?
Currently I’m addicted to Parenthood. My other recent favorite shows are Sons of Anarchy and Breaking Bad. I’m looking forward to the next seasons coming out this September!

What is your favorite music/song?
I love anything Country.

What is your favorite food/local restaurant?
I love Sushi and Mexican food. My favorite places are Rita’s and Bayfront.

What kinds of books do you like? Do you have a favorite author?
I’m going to sound like a nerd but my favorite books are the Harry Potter series…

What is your favorite place in Humboldt County?
That’s a hard one. I love this area and I think everywhere you go is beautiful. But, if I had to pick a favorite outdoors spot I’d pick Strawberry Rock. My husband and I have been enjoying that hike since high school and you can’t beat the feeling you get once you get to the top and have the privilege of overlooking the beautiful ocean. You realize how big the world is and how incredibly beautiful Humboldt is.

If you could go anywhere on vacation, where would it be?
Kauai or Norway. Those are my two favorite places I have gone thus far and I’ve never seen anything more beautiful. Kauai for its incredible beaches and Norway for the fjords and amazing, clean environment. I’d go back to either in a heartbeat.

What are your hobbies?
Running, kayaking and baking in that order. I’ve learned to take advantage of the amazing Humboldt outdoors after growing up here and baking because in the wintertime, there is nothing more relaxing than baking and a huge fire inside.

Are you involved in any community groups/service projects?
Yes.  I’d like to do more if I had more time but currently I assist with a program very dear to me called Girls on the Run. It’s a running based program that promotes positive/healthy living and self esteem building. Their motto is teaching young girls “they are the boss of their brain.” I also strongly support the local Discovery Museum here by contributing to their event planning committees and marketing when time allows.

What do you do when you’re not at work?
Spend time with my family, take my dog on long runs…kayak, camp or travel. I try to always stay busy.

What is your favorite place to go on campus during your lunchtime?
I usually utilize my lunch break to go for a nice run. My favorite is the forest behind campus.

What is one thing people would be surprised to hear about you?
I have a birthmark on my back in the perfect shape of a heart. People always are surprised by that one…I guess you don’t see that everyday.
